Donec eris felix, multos numerabis amicos;
Tempora si fuerint nubila solus eris.

  1. If you are wealthy you will have many friends, but once you become poor or going through tough times you will lose those “friends”.

    If you have cake you will have a lot of friends but if you become fat and eat all of the cake you will lose them.

  2. Sounds like Ovid was a rather fun guy, a real ray of sunshine on a cloudy day.
    His belief is that all friendship is a temporary condition, which will be terminated at the first sign of the relationship not benefiting the other “friend”.

    For instance:
    A rich man has many friends, and they all go out to eat, go to the theater, and sail for awhile on his yacht.
    But as they are away from home, the rich man’s piggy bank, in which all his money was kept, slid off a shelf into his Olympic sized swimming pool, and all his money became useless.
    His friends instantly stiffen, sniff the air. The rich man’s cigar grows cold, and crumbles as it falls from his lips. His newly found acquaintances stand, make excuses, and leave, never to return, for for leaving a yacht when it is not docked is a rather risky business.
